His PhD in natural sciences history was completed at the University of Marburg in 1989 under the supervision of Rudolf Schmitz, and it was on the topic of certain nineteenth-century botanists and their link to the growing Darwinism that he was awarded his degree.
The University of Cambridge’s Charles Darwin Correspondence Project employed him between 1992 and 1995, most recently as Associate Editor for the project. Between 1993 and 1995, he was a Feodor Lynen Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, where he collaborated with Ernst Mayr on a number of projects.

On Sunday, August 15, at 8:15 p.m., the MDR will screen a special edition of THOMAS JUNKER UNDERWEGS to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the programme. In the winter, the pearls of Russia are a sight to see. A 90-minute video including the greatest anecdotes from all of my winter travels around Russia and the Ukraine.
All of the recordings, even those from 2006 (beyond the warmth), have been remastered and polished to a high gloss for this purpose. Although it wasn’t shown in high definition at the time, I shot it in high definition anyhow. Consequently, the highest possible quality is provided for all of the tales in this unique programme.
Thomas Junker – 30 Years of Stories From This World is the title of my latest book. To commemorate this occasion, I have personally dedicated each book to the recipient.
